I use it for all grains but I find that some dry out more than others. also it is not so good for one cup.

I steam my veggies in a microwave bowl with a bit of water on the bottom of the bowl and a paper towel over the top of the bowl.
I have used a rice cooker to cook brown rice on the bottom with spices and veggies on the top steamer section. I like to use curry and have an Indian inspired side dish.

machines are made with different features; I didn't know I'd love mine so much when I got it, I got the smallest cheapest . . . with no features . . .

Honestly, I just kind of dump spices in like curry, cumin, parsley, some cinammon...It just comes out tasting like I am eating in a cafe in Bombay!

its funny cuz I got a rice cooker/veggie steamer as a wedding gift. at the time I thought what in the world am I gonna do with this. well here it is 8 yrs. later and we were cleaning out our basement and I saw it. I decided to try it. its been great. I make rice all the time and to steam veggies, I just cut up a bunch of onions, zuchinni, peppers, mushrooms etc. and dump in some spices. it tasted great and its so much healthier.
