I switched to formula when my baby was 3 month so then I gave him 4 oz every 3 hours and he gained nicely

2-4 oz.
but the amount they eat and gain totally depends on the child and is different by everyone.

When I was concerned that my bottle fed baby was eating too much (and using the bottle as a way as soothing herself - not only for nourishment) my pediatrician explained that a baby should eat about double her current weight in ounces, each day. That means a 9 lb baby should get approximately 18 ounces of formula/pumped milk on a daily basis - this amount should be divided the amount of feedings the baby tyoically has in a 24 hour cycle (taking into account the longer stretch baby is doing at night, hopefully)
That means if the baby has 6 feedings per day, the 18 ounces will be divided into 3 ounce bottles.
Now you know why your teacher said that math is important for mothers....
