I'm visiting someone in nyc now and and she doesn't use filters. Is a brita pitcher considered enough to filter out bugs? We'll buy water tomorrow but want an answer now. Tia

just googled and found this:

http://www.hakhel.info/archive.....1.pdf

It's from some organization. I don't know who they are and if that's who you follow but it says there that the brita pitcher filter is not good- it lets bugs through. Only the faucet mounted brita is good.
Take what you want from that.

Just realized that it's from a few years ago, so could be things changed since then.

Why don't you ask whoever told you that you have to drink filtered water?

abaker, yes, the water problem IS a New York thing. In short, there are tiny bugs in the NY water system (in some areas) that are debatably visible or not visible to the eye, and so some people don't drink the water without filtering it first.

My understanding is that a Brita filter is not small enough to filter out the bugs, but that information is also several years old, so if they've changed their filter in the interim, the answer may be different. Still, I definitely wouldn't just assume its fine unless a Rav specifically tells you that it's good now.
