Please help! My 2 1/2 year old has pink eye and needs eye drops for a few days. So far it's been a nightmare and my husband and I feel so awful pinning him down while she screams and fights. Any practical tips?

I once babysat a three year old, who needed eyedrops, the dr said, to have the kid lay down, and close his eyes then to put the drops in the inside corner and have him open, the drops automatically get blinked in, (I also have a hard time putting eyedrops in myself, and this is what I do for me)

You just evoked memories of me and DH doing exactly that with our very high-strung youngest DD. One of us would pin her down and the other would try to do the drops while she thrashed around, kicking and screaming. No practical advice - just try to avoid feeling guilty in any way, remember you're doing it for her benefit. Speak lovingly to her while you administer the drops and explain what you are doing. Not much more you can do.

My doc had same advice as single mom above. Just used this method successfully when my DD recently had pink eye

Another vote for the closed eye method. Worked great with my dd.

Yes, this is what we did too but DD was so defensive it didn't matter to her where we actually put the drops. No matter, she's none the worse for it now as a teenager though she's still difficult about taking 'gross' medications and swallowing pills. She's always hated anything medical - used to cry hysterically the minute she caught sight of her (very gentle and patient) pediatrician.

Pinch the skin below the eye to create a pocket. Put the drops in the pocket. You can do this easily while patient is standing. No need to pin down and no pain. Makes eye drops really simple to put in on yourself or someone else.

This is how I do it - lie her down, let her close her eyes put the drops at the corner of the eye and then tell her to open her eyes and look up (you can try a book or something she likes) staying in that same position. The drops will go into the eye.

another vote for closing the eyes - putting the drops onto the closed eyelid - then blinking ...

the only other option out there is to get opthalmic neosporin ointment and put a small amount on a q-tip on the outer lid - it will seep in

OP
Thank you all so much for responding, I really appreciate it!Keeping his eyes shut and putting them in the corner is a great idea but he's too defensive at this point and freaks out no matter what. The promise of treats and prizes helps a little but I guess it's just one of those things that stinks but you just have to do it
