Suggestions? They have an mp3 player, and I am considering a Snap Circuits set. Anything else? Approximately $40 range.

Those devil sticks look interesting, how do they work? We used to have something like that we called it a spin stick. Is that similar?

For my son at that age I got

an overnight bag with his name on it - surprisingly he loved it.
a vibrating alarm clock
cufflinks
Bop-It
A marble run (it costs closer to $100 though)
thought of a uni-cycle but didn't do it yet.
A MP3 player
ripstick

Also wondering if anyone out there got their son a telescope and how if they enjoyed it.

my ds's friend taught him to use the devil sticks but I bet there's some good youtube videos. and apparently most kids can figure it out on their own (I cant).

my ds11 wants a sleeping bag for chanuka, or a pop up tent.
I think he'd love a unicycle.
what he ***really*** wants is a swiss army knife but I vetoed that one pretty quick. I'm not ready, though dh thinks its fine.
what about a pogo stick?
my il's bought the kids a marble run a couple of years ago, kids used it once or twice and its been untouched since.
my dd love love loves her ripstick, that's a good idea too.

oh I forgot the telescope part of the question..
we bought one once. a nice one too. kids were not enamored. one of my more um, hands on type? kids took it apart and used the lenses and tubes to build his own little magnifiers. so it was educational I guess, but disappointing.

lol -- I was actually debating between snap circuits and an mp3 player for the same age range. If he has an mp3 player, no need to venture farther than the snap circuits as they seem to be loved by just about all boys I know in that age range!

I must be living under a rock but never heard of snap circuits. How do they work? Would an 11 year old ball player like it or do you need to be more of the smarty type of kid?

Snap circuits are amazing! My son loved his starter set, so we recently added the rover. Check it out!

Is the rover an add on or can you use it to start off? Also, still wondering if your son needs to be the academic type for this.

The rover is amazing on its own. Look around for a good price, there are some great deals now. Just know that there are two versions, the standard rover and the more sophisticated deluxe version. I think any boy who likes to tinker would love it. The instructions are as simple as following the diagrams in a lego set.

A vibrating alarm clock sounds like a great idea. Did your son like it? Which one did you get?
