I would like to remove the rust around the metal drain in my ceramic sink...however I am concerned not to use anything harsh that might crack the ceramic...help! I do not want to have to get a new sink

Naval jelly, found in hardware stores. It's extremely corrosive so must be used with rubber gloves (eye protection, too, if you have it) and great care, but it will not harm the ceramic.

Try making a paste of baking soda and letting it sit on the rust for a while

There's this stuff that's not harsh at all. It's kind of like soft scrub but for rust. I got it at home depot I think. Or maybe at the supermarket. I used some on my granite countertops because something had rusted on them randomly. I put it on for 1 minute and sponged it right off.
