I recently made a subscription to our local jewish library. There is a fee for each book I borrow, so I really don't wont to waste my money and time on books I wont enjoy.
I love to read, but I only enjoy work that is really well written and well researched. As a kid I enjoyed all those crazy mystery novels and those with the mossad etc.
At this point I like either romance (rare in the jewish novel world, I know) or family. I just finished Sun Inside Rain and loved it. Any other recommendations?

Autum Rains is good (sorry, can't remember the author).

Happy reading!

Anything by Etka Gitel Schwartz: The Grey Lines, Full Harvest and Shortchanged
All are amazing.
A time to rend a time to sow (as someone already mentioned)
I love the people speak by chaim walder
I also loved Sun Inside Rain. One of my favorite books.
Truth is, I love just about anything that has words in it

As long as I live אתהלך a biography by Rabbi Aron margalit is an absolute must read. Besides for his story being extremely inspiring and uplifting, it is amazingly well written. I salivated over this book!

"The Betrayal" and "The Outcast" by M. Kenan - both fantastic. Thick books but I loved every page. Historic fiction with a lot of character development.

I second quite a few:
M. Kenan
E. G. Schwartz (for other people following this, I see you've read her)
Meir Uri Gottesman - his books are somewhat folklorish but elegantly and engagingly written and well researched
Libi Astaire - Terra Incognita is extremely well researched. She also wrote some lighter books, mysteries set in the 1800s
About the thrillers: I used to read them and have little patience. I did read The Protocols this year and was surprised to find it very readable. It could be because it was translated well (Libby Lazewnik IIRC)
If you want to go outside your comfort zone and read non-fiction, I totally second As Long As I Live, the English translation of Eshalech. To Remain a Jew, Rav Yitzchak Zilber's memoirs is great reading as is The Underground.
There are more good novels, and quite a few new books I haven't read yet, but this is a start.

Another very strong vote for The Guest House by Gita Gordon. Would that such a place existed...!
A Recipe for Disaster by E.Z. Berry --
Library in a Book (old and still the standard)
Sudy Rosengarten books (An Onion for the Doctor, etc.)
Enjoy!

The Shul Boy and yes, I read it. It's like Morning Star in that but while there's historical stuff it's not quite the same. What can you say, he's such a gifted writer, though his books tend toward the folklorish and offbeat.
