Are you supposed to give a gift for upsherin? If so, what kind of gift do you give?

We hosted an upsherin for family and close friends, I would say it was appreciated but not expected. We got some Jewish books, an uncle moishy CD, a personalized kippa, and some general toys like puzzles play doh etc. We very much just wanted people to come and enjoy, not feel like they had to give something. Hope that helps!

I don't believe in supposed tos ... however, all things considered it's a nice idea to bring a gift
I'm also into jewish themes since it's a jewish milestone for a boy

I don't think anybody will be upset if you don't, but if you have the means and feel close to the people making it, it's certainly appreciated, and I would venture that the majority of people coming will get something. You could get a cute yarmulke with his name, tzitzis, a Jewish CD (Uncle Moishy, etc.), a book, or a gift cert. to a Jewish bookstore.
