People I've known who had needles around from insulin or fertility drugs usually put them in something with a lid (like an empty container from peanut butter or cottage cheese) and then throw out the container.

That's a good idea.
I sometimes tape sharp blades to a piece of corrugated cardboard.

I think of putting them in aluminum foil - but they don't seem so safe
the container sounds good - unless it cracks
the corrugated box edge also seems good - I might try that - but when someone thinks it's cardboard they might just see it as such and not be careful
I guess I have to check my head as to why I care if the garbage is safe

PSA: Medical sharps should always be disposed in a sharps disposal box like this:

Using a peanut butter container is an idea for other sharps, though I assume they are often larger then the container. I'm ambivalent when disposing of no-longer-usable-for-me knives...

Kitchen knives can be donated to Goodwill.
Medical sharps go in a pharmacy approved container.
Box cutter blades can go into a Gatorade bottle, and duct tape the cap on well.
When in doubt, call your garbage company for advice.
