"rav" as a common noun? As in the following sentence: All the boys stood up when the venerable rav/Rav entered their classroom.

I think it is only capitalized when used as a title before a name.

I thought so, too, but I gave that question on a test, and my supervisor says it should be capitalized. I don't see why it should be, but does anyone here know if she's right?

When people refer to their rosh yeshiva, they write it as the Rosh Yeshiva. I would think if the title is being used in place of a name, instead of simply a label for a rabbinical position, it could deserve a capital letter.
Like in the sentence, "we listened to the President's speech."
