Could someone give me a synopsis of this book?

I didn't know it on a book, but I remember listening to it on tape, with songs, it's basically, this zeidy telling his grandchildren, about what it was like growing up on the lower east side, specifically a story of what happened when his father was fired from his job for not working on shabbat. I loved it, and the songs, and I would get the tape/cd just for those songs.

Me, too!
I bought both CDs for my kids and I sometimes find myself singing the songs.
The first one is about life on the Lower East Side in the 1930's. It was difficult for the father of the family to keep a job because he kept Shabbos. Once the main character, Heshy, got on the trolley and forgot his nickel. The mayor of NYC, Fiorella LaGuardia ("Figalleli LaGardenhose") pays for him. Eventually there was a fire in a nearby factory, the father put out the fire, and was offered a job there.
The second one is about the shul Anshei Kartoful. The city wanted to knock down the shul on the Shabbos of the main character's cousin's bar mitzvah. Heshy invites the mayor, who is looking for Heshy so he can publicize the trolley story and use it to gain the Jewish vote in the upcoming election. The mayor eventually comes to the bar mitzvah and stops the housing department from destroying the shul just in time.
The stories are good, but the songs are really the best part.

I would def get the original CDs, bc I was just watching the oorah special, and they cut some really cute lines, when they buy the fish for shabbat

Really good tapes! My now adult sons loved them, and my elderly mother, who really did grow up in New York during the Depression, also enjoyed them.

Rabbi Kunda ZT"L was such a talented person (his illustrations were also wonderful), he is truly missed.
