I am looking to spend a 'shabbos getaway' with my family within the next month.
Wlling to drive up to 3 hours from Chicago.
preferably looking for a place with kosher food etc.

Is there any kosher vacation spot in a neighboring state? would like to explore some new place...

Any leads would be appreciated!

South Haven?
Lake Geneva?

How far is DeMoin(spelling?) Iowa?

You can do kosher meals on wheels.

Milwaukee is the obvious one

South bend or St. Louis may be more than 3 hours. If you don't care to bring your own food you can do Wisconsin dells

In the summer- Michiana or south haven

Also cute places like Door County are nice but also need to bring food.

Is there kosher food available at those locations
(South Haven/ Lake Geneva/ How far is DeMoin(spelling?) Iowa?)
Any Shuls in the area?
Also - what is meals on wheels?

Re Milwaukee: any idea how I would go about finding accommodations?

You won't find prepared kosher food this time of year in South Haven or Lake Geneva unless you run across a special program (like there was over winter break weekend in Lake Geneva). In the summer you may be able to rent a bungalow adjacent to Camp Agudah Midwest in South Haven and get food from the camp. And no shuls in either place again except for South Haven in the summer. Only place you'll find what you want is Milwaukee and I don't think it's much of a "vacation" place.

Not the OP, but I have always wondered what people do in the dells. Aren't the hotel water parks packed? DH wouldn't go to the water park with other people, so it would be me alone with the kids. Im not sure I would enjoy that, and he would probably sit in the hotel room and learn all day. Which I guess he would enjoy anyway!
Maybe some places are not as crowded, but I doubt the pool area would be empty.

Just curious, what people do when the go.

When we have gone away to places with out kosher food, Ive packed meat in a cooler and brought a long a small george forman. We have actually made hamburgers, or grilled burgers in the hotel room. Its a nice way to have a hot meal.

Also, you can buy one time use grills and have a bbq in a park.

While you can bring your own food, it is much more difficult to bring your own minyan.

if you want to go somewhere for shabbos thats 3 hours or closer your pretty much limited to Milwaukee (1 hour) or South Bend (2 hours). I dont think either place is a vacation spot- esp in the winter.

If you want to make it into a long weekend... maybe see about going to Michigan City (there is skiing, snow-tubing etc there) for the non-Shabbos part (bring your own food) and then go to South Bend for Shabbos... tho you would really have to find someone to stay at.

Dunno much about attractions near Milwaukee but there probably is also some place within an hour or so that has winter sports and you could go there for Shabbos. Dunno if they have accommodations other then in peoples houses there either.

OP was looking for a place close to a year ago -- hopefully they found one. That said, Postville is well over 3 hours from Chicago.
