I'm really not sure if the money gifts will actually go to her parents or to the couple. But I do know that her parents spent over $30,000 for this whole wedding! When I got married (in Israel) it was much cheaper, but we didn't have many people and in the end, my dad spent more money than getting back money from the guests. So in the end, the gift money that we've received, my dad had to use it to pay for the hall etc. But of course, my dad still give us a sum of money and made us a beautiful sheva brachot in Jerusalem. So I didn't really think that we didn't have as much money after the wedding. But today, I guess many couples are expecting large gifts. Also, in NY/NJ weddings are so expensive (especially if you choose the fancy halls and my brother's bride chose a fancy one!).
