Are the extension leads with multiple sockets considered safe? I have a regular 4 socket extension lead and use it for laptop, printer, phone, with the fourth socket used for another extension that I insert two plugs -- broadband and extra computer screen. The extension is surge protected. Does that sound safe? I'm wondering if perhaps an official 8 socket extension would be better...
I know they are used in many offices but are they really safe?

It depends on how the extension is rated, and how many amps the plugins are drawing and the amps provided on the circuit.
If it is rated at 20 amps and all the items are plugged in and running and drawing an excess of 20 amps on a 20 amp circuit it is not the best practice. If under the same circumstances it's plugged into a 15 amp circuit you are asking for big trouble.
