My mom, who is a senior citizen just received a Chip Card in the mail. She called to tell me that she received the card, which we were expecting...but she said it does not say that it must be activated. She said there is no sticker on top of the card to remove and call the special number to activate. I do not live in the same city as my mom, so can I just assume she is right, or should I call the bank to verify if she needs to activate the card?

Are you talking about a credit card or a debit card with a little square silver box on the front? If so, that's a chip and pin card.
I don't live in the US and most places outside the US use them. From the last time I travelled to the States I found that a few places are switching over to them. What it means is that instead of signing for your purchases, you use a pin code at the point of purchase. Did your mother receive a pin in the post as well?
Again, if it is a chip and pin card, yes, she will need to ring the bank to activate it, I always have anyway, the same as the old cards. If she has no pin, she'll have to have it reset so that she can create one. You usually have to go into the bank in person with an ID to do that. She may have just received the card before the pin though.
Hope that helps.
