Hi,
I'm moving into a new apt that has a dishwasher in it. Can I kasher it? It's plastic.

Thanks!!!

I don't think so...you can sometimes kasher the stainless steel ones, if you buy new racks...

op: It looks like plastic. What would the situation be if it was ceramic?

Ask your rav. Some say you can leave it for a year.

what was it used for? was it used by non Jews?

let me tell you sofmething - dh and I rented apt for over 20 years. each time we didn't have a good fridge, decent oven, etc., we suffered.

I finally priced these things and they don't cost the moon. maybe look into replacing it and perhaps you landlord will do someting for you $$$$$.

Yes - if it is newer you could suggest they move the dishwasher into another rental that could use it and buy a new one for yours (dishwashers are very easy to install).

Some Rabbanim say to leave it for 6 months, some Rabbanim say to leave it for a year. You need to ask your LOR.

Ask a shaila. I was told that plastic CAN be kashered, but enamel cannot.

If anyone has more info, I'd appreciate it. We are moving and will be redoing the kitchen. I'm planning on having two dishwashers. I have stainless steel inside right now, which I really like, but I'd have to take into consideration the extra cost of stainless interior x2. Even with setting up a kosher kitchen from day 1, I like to make things "kasherable" as much as possible, since mistakes will happen. Even though my rav has told me plastic can be kashered, I'm wondering what others (esp. on a non-Chabad, MO level) have been told, because I would want to have people over for meals and wouldn't want them to feel that my kashrut wasn't okay.
