Does anyone know how I can get permission to use a public school yard for a community event I want to do

I would first call 311, and they should be able to direct you. Other possibilities would be calling the school and ask who's in charge of it, or your local city councilman or police precinct about permit info.

Walk into the school and ask the security person whom to talk to. I would assume the principal can help you.
