Are there some mortgage brokers that are better than others? What should I know?

I am the OP from the other Lakewood post (couple in early 50's) and would be interested in knowing this as well. A real estate broker recommended a mortgage broker who seemed to know what he was doing. We have a complicated situation and hopefully he advised us correctly. I would feel better if we had gotten the recommendation from someone who actually used this mortgage broker.

Anyone? Whats the difference between the deal one mortgage broker offers you and another? What is it important to ask and look out for?

I don't live in Lakewod, but you should certainly shop around because they're not all giving you the same deal. The most important thing is the rate, because once you get the mortgage, they're going to sell it, and you're never going to deal with them again, but the rate is locked in for 15/30 years. You also want to find out about the small fees, which can vary from place to place. Obviously it goes without saying that you need a reliable place that can actually close and get you the money when they say they will.
