Hi All,
My husband and I want to go to Israel in August. I would like to leave from an airport in Ny,can be Newark or Philadelphia too. Any idea how to go about getting the best rate? We don't mind a short stopover if it will significantly decrease costs.
So far ,the cheapest flights are on Azerbaijan airlines and some other Russian one.
I am worried that if there is any issue with the plane etc...they won't be so reliable in compensating customers or making alternate arrangements. Anyone have experience with this?
Also,is it better to buy tickets now or closer to the trip to keep costs down?
Thanks!

August is very expensive. I know a lot of people fly through Russia and they get here, but that's all I know.

Can you fly late August and return early September? Airfare comes down somewhat if you can travel the last week of August. I checked Turkish Airlines and found $812 for 24 Aug-2 Sept (or $894 for 31 Aug return).

Definitely don't wait! Prices will almost surely rise, and rise a lot, as the summer approaches. Probably the Russian airlines will be your cheapest option. Just buy the tickets on an American Express that gives the best customer protection in the event of problems.

My sister is coming through Russia in August. She's saving $800 per ticket (I think) plus you get a second suitcase for free

It's very expensive in august - try contacting travel agents rather than buying online. I've found that I saved quite a bit that way during the expensive months.

Op here: we ended up booking with Azerbijan airlines. Two tickets and travel insurance was about $1750 .there's a two hour stop each way. We can check in two 23 kilo bags per person. So I hope it all goes well but it seems to be a great savings compared to El Al direct.
Thanks to all for the advice!
