My son was running all around on a visit to the doctor. He is nineteen months. The doctor said he is hyper and could benefit from ot. Did anyone hear of this?

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES! My son was also a very hyper/all over the place kid. He is not add or adhd, he just has excess energy and has a hard time calming down, especially when we are out. It took us until he was 4 to start OT, and the OT said "my gosh, the way you are describing him as a baby means he should have been here at age 12 months!" OT is an incredible helpful tool. They work on grounding them--being present and focused, feeling in control of their bodies, and many other things. I also have a friend who did OT for this reason. Take care of it when he is young and you will be doing him a huge favor for the long run.

There's a strong chance you could get OT for free from the Board of Health (0-3 services), depending on where you live. See if you can get him evaluated for free before shelling out. It can be enormously helpful.

I had the opposite problem - I had a low-muscle-tone baby, and OT really helped him catch up. I loved what the OT did with him so much that now I have a more hyper baby, I hired her (I liked her work) out of pocket, and she's working on my son's self-regulation (he's 20 months old) I already see a big difference in how he approaches toys to play with them (he doesn't just toss toys around or run around in circles with them, he actually plays WITH the toy, if you know what I mean)

The OT I used no longer works for the board of health - so I had to pay privately, because I wanted specifically her, and my baby's problem wasn't severe enough to get him services. But it pays to have the free eval first.
