I have been noticing that my dishtowels and dishclothes still feel kind of dirty, even straight from the laundry.

I wash them in hot water, but they never feel clean. (I don't have this problem with my bath towels.)

Does there come a time to retire the towels, and replace them? Am I missing an important step in laundry.

Thanks.

What washing compound are you using? Grease may be building up and lending that dirty feeling. You can try presoaking, washing once, then washing again, or try using washing soda or borax in addition to detergent. These have been used for well over a century to get grease out of soiled work clothes. You really should not need to replace dishtowels till they wear out, though you might want to for esthetic reasons if they are badly stained.

Do NOT use fabric softener on these items, as it reduces the absorption.
