Commercial mayonnaise is made of pasteurized eggs, AFAIK, and can handle being out for four hours, especially not during the summer.

I am not upto sending my ds lunch as playgroup provides but tricks I use for myself going to work is to freeze the drink so it works as an ice pack and stays cold. I will freeze a yogurt for a few hours to help it keep better. I create the oddest combos for salad using tuna eggs or left over chicken or at times even deli as the protien and whatever vegis are around and noodles rice or croutons as a carb. crackers with avacado, tuna or chumus are also great. my neighbor sends wraps with all sorts of fillings as its more fun than bread.

My kids also enjoy whole wheat banana or carrot muffins, veggies and dip (usually russian dressing,) apple quarters (I always was told the brown part is pectin and it is very healthy!,) cottage cheese and whole grain crackers/pretzels. Sometimes cereal in a bag as a morning extra (waiting for bus.) This is for their 10 AM meal, as they get hot lunches from the school/afternoon program.

I put DD's cut up apple in a baggie inside a plastic container - she sometimes complains, sometimes she doesn't
in general I send
apple/melon/orange cut up for morning snack with
sliced pepper/ cucumbers
lunch:
melted cheese/ cream cheese sandwich/bagel
cookie/ piece of cake
2 slices of cheese (if I make melted cheese I skip that)
some veggies or some other fruit
afternoon snack:
pretzels/corn chips/bissli/wafer

Today: cream cheese on bagel, grapes, string cheese, corn chips, ketchup potato chips, a bottle of water.
The general menu:
American cheese on whole wheat or cream cheese on bagel
cucumber or grapes or bell pepper slices or an apple
2 packs potato chips, corn chips, bissli or similar
water bottle
sometimes string cheese
The school is nut free so we can't send nuts or peanut butter sandwiches. The chummus sandwich idea is interesting... dear foster son likes chummus, I wonder if he'd eat it in a sandwich.

I sometimes use whole wheat mini pitas instead of bread for variety. It is also easy for little kids to hold and keeps the sandwich together.

Some of you are lucky that you can send meat lunches, my school only allowes dairy or parve, and im running out of ideas.
I usually send:
Falafel, pitta and couscouse with a banana and cookies
Pasta and cheese with grapes and cookies
Cream cheese sandw. with apple and crackers
Fish sticks with fries and oranges and cereal bar
Rice and salad, and some fruit.
But I think eventually my son will just get bored with it all, and I am not so inventive as to come up with these interesting meals. Any other ideas for dairy or parve lunches???

I have lunch bags for my kids. They are insulated like a picnic box. I give them a real meal(whatever is left of supper) in a box, even though there is no microwave and they'll eat it cold. Under the box I put in a freezella ( freezer pack), so the food stays cold even if it's +35 degrees outside. they get anything - rice, pasta, buckwheat, couscous, and with it either burgers, of fried fish, or shnitzels. Good luck!
