Hard to say without knowing more. Sometimes completely inoffensive remarks can be suspicious due to context. Guys who are either insecure about rejection or pursuing someone officially off-limits often intentionally hover just inside the border of plausible deniability.

If you aren't sure about the intent, answer in a polite definitive way that puts an end to the email thread. If he persists in trying to keep it going, you can reassess.

I would tell you that if the facts are: a man who you previously worked with corresponds with you via email regarding business matters- if you ignore him then you are being rude and inappropriate.

Follow your intuition. If you have a feeling something is wrong, please ignore him from the start. Don't wait for it to become a 'sickening drama'.

Don't worry, I'm the last person to get sucked in! Intuition tells me to ignore and that's what I've done, just wanted an outsider's affirmation.
