Do you mean the Guttmann Girls? I used them with two of my children. One had anxiety issues; the other learning issues. They are amazing and very dedicated. None of my children are receiving any services now after being treated by them (one did continue with speech for a year after). I highly recommend them. I do warn you - they expect a lot of carryover from parents. What do you want to know about them? What are your child's issues?

ds has sensory and attentional issues that are causing a lot of problems in school. The school has suggested I get him tested for adhd but I would only use medicine as a last resort and I am desperate for another way of handling this. It is a huge expense and they no longer accept insurance but if there is even a possibility of them helping him, I am willing to take the risk. I am concerned about the amount of work it will entail at home, firstly because of balancing that with all my other children's needs and secondly, ds can be very difficult and may just refuse to participate in any exercises necessary. How did you manage?

Well, first of all, I'm sorry the school is pushing you down the medicine track. That must be difficult.
I too have other children at home. The carryover is difficult; but not always so intense for all the kids. One child had only two things to do before bedtime; the other had a morning and afternoon carryover. It really depends on your child. I will tell you - once you start doing it, it becomes habit; almost a joke. It's difficult in the begininng, but it does get easier. Also, they tend to scare you (they don't want parents coming and paying if they won't do the carryover); they do prepare the children therapeutically to handle what needs to be done at home. It is work, but well worth it. I felt that having my children in "therapy" for years on end was a waste of their free time. I have no regrets about working hard for 1/2 year to get the results. Why don't you speak to them about your concerns. Did you already go for an evaluation?

Also, with regard to your question about your child being difficult sometimes, they work with parents with the behavioral component. They are aware that children may be oppositional, but they truly understand the sensory need behind the behavior and give very specific tools and ideas in how to get the carryover implemented. All I can say is that they have been honest and on the mark and truly give individualized care . They may be difficult to get through to on the phone, but once you are in treatment, they are available all the time to support the family. What were their recommendations?

I'm also torn... they sound like they *might* be the answer to our prayers, but who can tell, and they ONLY take out of pocket?!!! Argh. They weren't asking an arm and a leg for the services because if I understand correctly you do a lot of the work at home, they just train you in for your kid's specific needs, but the evaluation is quite costly - $950 or something WITHOUT the written report. Sounds like highway robbery to me, I'd expect to pay that for a developmental psychologist WITH a report. No sliding scale, no insurance, no dept of ed. Wah.

Having gone through the evaluation, they are definitely worth the 950. I've had my children evaluated by neuropsychologists and developmental specialists that charged 2,500 - 3,000 that did less testing than they did. They offer the evaluation without the report for those parents that can't afford paying more for "paper" that never gets used. I think it's pretty reasonable on their end. They are highly trained and I feel worth every penny. Also, they are really devoted to the children.

I just wonder if the paper will be important if I hope to get something from the Dept of Ed...

Last amother, are you the same as the one who posted right below OP? Wish there were some way to differentiate so we know whether they are getting many votes of confidence or just one person posting many times...

And how old were your kids who you used them for? Mine just turned 3. I don't know if I'm wisely intervening early or looking for issues in a kid who's too young to have them. I just have this niggling worry... DOE evaluation turned up possible concerns but nothing diagnosis-worthy, so no services either.

Seeker, I am a different amother than the one that posted after OP. My child is 8 years old. With regard to age, it might be too young...don't know. I had been through the DOE for years. They were wonderful and honest about what to expect. They get results and I feel were worth every penny.

Bumping this thread to notify the people who were following it - I started a new thread asking for reviews but then found this one (I had searched before, don't know why it didn't come up in the first place)

Anyway, some questions for you who used these people or know people who did or whatever:
1. Does their therapy help with social issues? I have both sensory and social concerns, but the social is what worries me most. I guess they could be connected. Did you see marked improvement in social skill problems after doing their therapy?

2. I realize that the specifics would be different for each kid, but can you tell me a bit about what types of exercises they recommended for you? I am not going to play around on my own, don't worry, I just want to get a feel for what kind of things this may involve.

3. If the exercises require any materials or equipment, do they provide it or do you need to buy it separately? I know you keep saying they were worth every penny but when you don't have many pennies and they're asking $2000 or more, these things start to matter...

I'm a little worried about the homework part. Part of me wishes I could just send my kid to an OT place and let them do whatever they do. I am a bit scatterbrained myself and have a hard time sticking to routines, our family schedule is so busy and it's hard to fit everything in - I work so getting some quality time and supper and bedtime routine all in before it's too late is about as much as I can handle.

What are they doing that's so different from a regular sensory OT who might be covered by the DOE or health insurance? They said over the phone that they do not take any DOE or insurance at all. Sad

There seem to be two amothers above who used them and I wish someone would answer amother with all the questions! I have questions too! My DD is in regular sensory OT through DOE but I still wonder if there is more I can/should do... but $$$... gleep. Her OT is now recommending a developmental optometrist eval, so that is a high probability of more stuff that needs to be paid for out of pocket, and I just dunno... sigh.

I'm using them for a year now for my nine year old son. Do a search under Guttman, you can see my experience with them.
I'm a bit disappointed so far but my sons issues are very extensive.
