There should be manufacturers instructions on how to spot clean a carpet based on fabric content and backing.

Buy an assortment of inexpensive washable slippers and have everyone who comes into the house leave street shoes at the door, the way the Japanese do.

To protect carpets, there are 3 levels of commitment - pick yours...
Level 1: everyone switches to indoor shoes when they arrive
Level 2: only serve food and drink in the same color as carpet (easy with beige, harder with blue)
Level 3: move the house to Australia - you will now be protecting the carpet by...walking on the ceiling

These suggestions are for prevention. And honestly, they are not very practical for us, even the serious response (Zaq). I'm looking for suggestions how to clean once they're already dirty.
Eta: Magenta, I don't think I got instructions from my carpet manufacturer.
