14 month old suddenly refuses to go to sleep!

My 14 month old baby was on a good sleep schedule- I would feed him, he would get drowsy and sometimes fall asleep in my arms, and I would put him into his crib.
The past few nights, he suddenly refuses to go to sleep and cries as soon as I put him into the crib! Tonight, he didn't even want to eat, because he knew what was going to happen after that!

Once he eventually falls asleep, he has a regular night sleep, and wakes up happy in the morning. Any ideas what the problem could be? He is happy and well adjusted during the day- I haven't noticed any differences other than this.
