Murphy's oil soap is advertised as THE thing to use on wood. But what you must remember is that water is the enemy of wood. Therefore, no matter what formula you choose, focus on creating a thick lather and use the lather, not the water, to remove the dirt. Wipe away the lather with another rag or sponge that is just barely damp, like a hankie that you spat on. Follow with a completely dry rag to remove the last traces of water.
As with anything, test on a hidden area before using on the whole wall or cabinet. Some paints can't take any wet method at all, in which case you can use something called a "dry sponge" that you get in a hardware store--this is not just a sponge that is dry but a special product designed for use on surfaces that will be damaged by any contact with water.
