My great grandmother who came from an Arabic speaking country was named Sayida (pronounced sah-ee-dah). I'm expecting now and it would mean a lot to my parents/grandparents if we named after her but we wouldn't use that specific name. I
looked online and saw that the meaning of the name is "happy" or "princess" but I have no clue if that's accurate. Anyone have an idea of possible Hebrew/Yiddish name equivalent?

My dh's family uses "sayid" and "sayideh" as a cute/affectionate, slightly humorous term of endearment.... I was told it means prince/princess.... I suppose Malka would be the closest? Although that's queen.... But close enough, no? Nesicha is princess but that's not a name I've ever heard.... Although don't they say Sarah is also princess? Maybe Sarah Malka would cover all bases:).... Beautiful name too!

Sarah is princess, and starts with S, so it's a good match
Atara means crown

It means "happy", so consider a name like Gila Rina, Aliza, etc.

I'm just Googling here, and I see that Sayida = Chief, Leader, Lady, Mrs.
But maybe this is not accurate?

I think Sayida means "happy." Like, "laylah sayida" is good night, or "eyad sayida" is happy holidays.
But I think you'd probably be best asking your grandparents what it means. That way you can be sure the name you give is something they think of as her name. JMHO.

OP here
Thanks for all the responses…some really interesting information and ideas! Sara Malka is a lovely name but I can't use either one. I think using a name of happiness is a great twist and I'll definitely try to get some more info from my family.

I love the name Sarina, I think it means princess, too (could definitely be wrong, that was a quick google search).
