Does it really need to be hot? Kids tend to be OK with food at room temperature.

I have a couple of the Thermos Funtainer insulated food jars (got them cheap from Amazing Savings!) that keep food hot. While you microwave the item, put some hot water in the jar, to heat the interior walls. Then dump it out, dry it quickly, and pop the hot item inside. It keeps things like chicken nuggets hot for my daughter until lunchtime.
