My HSC, DS, almost 8 years old has a really difficult time sleeping in his room. He says his room scares him. The other day while crying about it, he blurted out that if he had color in his room, it would be better. Any suggestions for adding color to a boy's room? Ideas and links would be very much appreciated.
I am posting anonymous since I've discussed this IRL.

You can do wall decals. Inexpensive and can always be removed

Get stencils of his choosing and paint a border around the ceiling and another at about his shoulder height.
Curtains.
A rug.
Get a canvass board and paint or have him paint a calming picture to hang on the wall.

Maybe if it has glow in the dark stars etc sticked onto ceiling he will not be so scared?

Let him look at decorating magazines, bring him to furniture stores with "rooms" set up, ask him if he has seen anything he likes at friends' houses.

I made a really bright and colorful poster for my son's room and I'm working on some more.

Get your son involved in the decision-making. I'd start with wall decals, linens, curtains, and maybe an area rug because they can be changed easily.

Encourage him to cut out posters and pictures from magazines that are of interest to him. Use blue "painter's tape", that you can get at any hardware store. You can safely use it on the walls, without leaving any residue or damage to the paint.
If you can paint the walls, paint them light blue, and then use white paint to make fluffy clouds. You could get yellow and paint a bright sun in one corner. Hang model airplanes from the ceiling.

My son loves having a gigantic colorful map of the world (the laminated type that would hang in a classroom) in his room. We also use it as a reference for various books we read.
He also has glow-in-the-dark star stickers on the ceiling and wall decals from Target of different vehicles, buildings and street signs. He likes to rearrange the decals every so often to change "his city" around.

I did my son's room a year ago. Royal be carpet. Light blue walls and a think foot long strip of navy from the ceiling down.
I also have a bold color cling fan in his room and Thomas linen. It's adorable!

You can add some colorful bedding and/or curtains to brighten his room. Easy to replace if/when he outgrows the look.
A throw rug.
You can paint one "accent wall" a bold color.
Try poking around Ikea for good and inexpensive ideas.

Bedspread, wall decals and throw rug...minimal investment and easy to change.

Wow! Thank you so much for all the ideas. I had a complete mental block (ok, I'm also really not the creative type).
