I think $5 a day sounds reasonable. I would keep it by the day - so that way, if she has sick kids a lot one month and cancels on you, then both you and she feel like it's fair. She will feel free to cancel when she needs to and you won't feel like you're getting the short end of the stick.

If that's too much, figure out what you can afford to pay, and offer that. You could also offer to "stroller pool" and take turns picking up one another's kids. That would be free and reduce your pickup load. Just an idea.

Where I live, most schools provide bus transportation. My son is in daycare though, and I cannot find anyone who will walk him home every day. No one will commit for that little money.

So here the busing starts the grade before 1st grade (pre-1A or kindergarten, depending what you call it) I do two preschool carpools (one for a boys school and one for a girls school) and then I do a carpool for 1st and 2nd grade girls who don't have free busing yet. I do it for extra pocket money, which I wouldn't have otherwise. It gives me money to put aside for things that I want, or things that we may not otherwise have money for.

There is no such a thing as "she is passing by anyway so not such a big deal".
Your kid might take an extra 5 minutes to get ready.
he might tantrum on the way home.
he might jump out of the stroller to chase a cat or have a tantrum.
her kid might resent his mommy not fully focused on him when she gets there.
it is much more than just a 20 minute babysitting job.
