Until now I've been making cholent in a pot on the stove. I put in quite a bit of water because the beans and barley absorb it, plus some water evaporates. I am considering making my cholent in a crockpot. Is there a rule of thumb about how much water to put in? I would not want it to be too dry or too watery.

I put in about 5 cups of water to one cup barley. I use pre-cooked beans.

Depends how hot your crockpot gets, when you start your cholent, what else is in the pot...

I use about 6.5 cups of water for 1 cup mixed dry beans and barley.
My crockpot runs cool.

How about making a cholent midweek as a test?

Water should cover the beans/meat completely. I do add a bit more water, but if you want it less watery just cover food completely.

Thanks for all your replies. I put in a half a cup of beans, 3/4 cup barley and 3/4 cup wheat berries, a large onion, two potatoes, a strip or two of cholent meat, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar and spices.

Probably between 3 and 4 cups.
