Limited budget does not allow for a dream Mac with all the features I would love, so here is the question:
Is it better to buy the latest Mac Air, or an older model Macbook Pro? Which one will be more powerful?
I need it mainly for internet research and writing, but also use Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, and AfterEffects occasionally.
Any advice? What is your opinion?

I have no idea, but I will say that my MacAir which is five years old performs flawlessly. I don't photoshop but I did use it to edit text for a few years. Are you buying private party or through Apple?

Prob through Apple or a certified reseller.
Do you have any heavy programs on your Mac Air?

No just the stuff it came with. I have a MacAir without a CD. I just wanted it for internet research and editing. Now I just use it for play. I had been using a friends MacBook Pro for a time before I got this and I liked how light it was.
I'm pretty sure that with what you want to do you would need the Pro. I think if you buy used reconditioned from Apple you can still buy Apple Care.
One thing I will say is the power cords stink. I just bought my 4th one and had the previous 2 replaced under Apple Care. The plastic coating on the outside isn't very strong and eventually you will have to replace it. I've been buying mine aftermarket on Amazon for $20 apx. for a 45 watt.
