Where does your inspiration come from?

Same place as most creative types.
Some combination of intent ("I want to write something today/this week"), time ("I'm going to sit down for half an hour and play/write"), observation ("wow, that's something I could make music about"), and training (I think I want a range of under/over an octave, I want the words of a song to appeal to this demographic, details about tempo, voicing, melodic and harmonic structure, etc).
How about you?

Wow imasinger, that's so methodical and organized! :-)
For me it's been a little different. I've dabbled in writing music for years but only very recently had the courage to finish a song and share it with someone close to me who has the equipment (and talent) necessary to make a nice recording. I told this person not to share it with anyone, and for my part I've only shared it with my husband. I'm kind of bursting to share it with more people, but I'm way too shy to actually do it. Until now no one even knew I composed. My method for this song is not replicable on demand. I was playing around on a piano keyboard and the song just sort of came to me. It probably took a lot longer than the actual writing though, because the words are from a tefillah that is very meaningful to me. I spent a lot of time thinking about that tefillah before the music came.
Not sure if that is typical or not, but I suppose there are probably a million ways songs are written. I really want to keep composing so I thought I would start a discussion on here about it.
