DD6 recently started making sharp, jerking, 'tracing' motions in the air when she is thinking or talking. When I ask her what she is doing, she says she is 'making shapes,' 'tracing' things that are in the distance, or 'drawing in the air'. She is learning to write numbers and letters in school... But this kind of seems like it might be a twitch of some sort.
It looks so odd and I haven't come across if before.
Is this normal? What does it come from?

I wouldn't be worried, give her some time and it will pass. she's learning that her words have actual shapes in the form of letters. maybe give her a tray of salt and tell her to trace in the salt.
when I was a kid I had a twitch where I felt like everything needed to be "balanced" and I would move my hands on one side. I had been taking art classes and learning about things like perspective and balance. no biggie, that's the kind of thing you outgrow.
