Please??? Anyone??? It's so daunting cuz everyone has a million recipes, I just want a few tried and true recipes that are hard to mess up. My cholent comes out watery sometimes, but being new in a kitchen (well, fairly new) and not that daring, I follow the recipe as it says, without lessening the water, altho I'm sure I could, but then I'm scared it'll burn!

I don't think you can find a recipe that fits every crock pot. The real trick is to try on your crock pot. Every time I buy a new one I have to re-figure out the setting/water.
What I found now is putting it up Thursday night on low the whole time makes it delicious. And another thing I discovered is rather have a bit of extra water than dry - but don't add any water once cooked-add a lot when you put it up and before Shabbos you can always take out some.
I find he best recipe is SIMPLE. Everyone loves my chulent.
-Spray crock pot with a lot of pam
-Put in about 2 cups of barley (I substitute rice a lot when I have gluten free guests and it's so much lighter!)
-Potatoes-I like it cut into small pieces
-Flanken/chulent meat (the better the meat the better the chulent)
-Diced onions
-Fresh garlic
-LOTS of spices: salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika. I pour on over each layer. I also taste it before shabbos and often have to add some more.
-WATER - more than to cover, especially if using rice need more water.
You can't go wrong with this!

K thanks! How many potatoes do you use? And how much flanken? For diced onions, can I use frozen,, or better to actually dice an onion? How many onions? Or how much diced onion? Rlly it's just for me and my husband, but we don't mind leftovers Smile

I make my cholent in a crock pot bag

About 4 - 5 cut up medium potatoes
2 onions, one diced and one cut into rings
5 garlic cloves sliced

Lots of salt
Garlic Powder
Lots of Onion powder
Montreal Steak Seasoning
Paprika
3 Squirts Ketchup
Honey (about 2 Tbsp but I just drizzle it over the top)

Boil beans and barley first separate. Rinse. cover in water plus more water. Bring to a boil. Turn off. let sit about an hour. Drain and rinse a few times and pour in pot.

1 strip flanken.
2 marrow bones (optional) but gives a very good taste.

For convenience sake I put everything together thursday except the meat and bones.
Friday morning I put it up with the meat on high. Before shabbos check if it is covered with enough water. If not I add a bit more water and move to medium.

I also like adding potato kugel in foil or 'kishkalahch' before shabbos

Half a bag Red kidney beans
Half a bag cranberry beans
Boil up with water to cover plus a little more
Add 2 tbsp salt
Squirt of western grill bbq sauce
Squirt of ketchup
Fried onions
Garlic powder black pepper onion powder small spritz of honey and mustard lots of paprika
Pkg marrow bones
Flanken either with or without bones
Some gizzards
Let cook if too little water add more closer to Shabbos, as a previous poster said you have to figure out your crockpot but I find rarely does all the water evaporate usually it's just a nice creamy chulent.

we used this recipe for our shul kiddush recently and everyone loved it.

http://www.joyofkosher.com/rec.....lent/

INGREDIENTS

2 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks
2 medium onions, peeled, cut into bite-sized chunks
1 (2-pound) piece of flanken, cut into 4 to 6 pieces
1/2 tablespoon coarse black pepper
3/4 cup barley
1 cup dried light red kidney beans
3 tablespoons Chicken onsommé Mix
2 tablespoons paprika
2 tablespoons honey
1 (1-pound) kishka loaf
3 cups water
PREPARATION

Line bottom of slow cooker with potatoes and onions.
Rinse flanken and pat dry. Place pieces around sides of crock pot, with bones on the outside.
Generously pepper meat.
Add barley and beans. Shake the pot a bit so some of the barley and beans fall into the spaces between the potatoes and onions.
Season with consommé mix, paprika and honey.
Place kishka on top.
Pour in water, adding more if necessary, to completely cover all ingredients.
Cook on low heat overnight, at least 8 hours.

I skipped the kishke and made it in a regular pot. (there are directions at the bottom for that)
