I don't know of a Sefer but I just read a novel based on the Megillah. It was fascinating. Esther by Rebecca Kanner.

This sounds fascinating. Would it be good for someone who has never really learned in depth before?

Consider Yoram Hazony's book The Dawn. It's not a Sefer per se, but it's a religious reading of the lessons in Esther.

Just the text with Rashi is fascinating enough. I like the Malbim on Esther. There is an English version by Rabbi Jonathan Taub. Another by Rav Mendel Weinbach. There may be more.
There are no difficult concepts that a person with little background would have trouble understanding. There are wonderful Jewish ideas that it is an easy springboard for.

Maybe get the Artscroll Esther (from their Tanach series), which has the Hebrew text and English translation, and a collection of nice insights of p'shat, derush, etc. on the bottom, similar to the Stone Chumash. Then if that's not enough, you could supplement it with one of the other books mentioned in this thread. Rabbi Fohrman's book is great, but probably not the best introduction to Esther to somebody who first just needs to know the basic plot and details.

I took a class on Esther in college. I still have my notes if you want a copy.
