I use these Sterilite drawers exactly as you described--one unit with different types of paper (construction, scrap paper, coloring books) in each drawer and another with crayons in one drawer, markers in another, etc. If you don't have quite as many stray crayons and markers as I do, you can probably use the smaller size Sterilite drawers:
http://www.target.com/p/steril.....rawer

There is a drawer stop, but if you squeeze in the sides of the drawer slightly, it comes out easily.

I also have these types of drawers (some of the medium units and some of the small units) to organize various games. Google "How to organize a game closet" for some amazing information on how to do this!

Another option for the crafts is to make your own "drawers" by using something like this http://www.walmart.com/ip/3247.....h=sem (I have a few, I'm surprised they didn't become popular!) and then using your pre-existing shoeboxes in there for the actual "take out" part but it will all look uniform when put away, and it will be less liable to open up and spill, and each thing can be taken separately. Not cheap though when adding up a few of them. They were cheaper in store when I bought them a few months ago.

I bought a few inexpensive mesh desk organizer pieces some years ago that work great for craft paper, crayons, scissors, etc.
They reside on top of the refrigerator. They're shallow so they look nice and neat up there.
A rectangular paper one. Another rectangular divider one that has separate sections for crayons, markers, pencils, pens, scissors, etc. And one extra smaller rectangular one.
We move then to the table during craft time (all the time! Smile )

why not get the trofast drawers from ikea with the shallow drawers? perfect for paper and good for pens and pencils, depending on how organised you want them. You could also put additional smaller boxes/drawers on top for small items.

Mummiedearest, how do you translate grocery box into paper sorter - lots of duct tape?
Unfortunately my local 99c stores have been a major dud at this kind of thing.

AmGold, any idea what brand your mom's is or where she got it?!!!

SingALong, thanks, I am going to check if WalMart ships them. Target is only available in store and Amazon is overpriced...

grocery box + box cutter + slots in appropriate places or packing tape. duct tape doesn't stick to cardboard long term, and packing tape is cheaper anyway.

Books:

I found the magazine holders useful for holding some soft cover books or a few books on their dresser.

In my toy closet I put a large cardboard box, I get them with my food deliveries and filled with the books standing. it holds a lot, is cheap, and does the job. It doesn't look very nice, but when I close the door no one sees.

I am a crafter, artist, clutterbug, and a magpie. I can give you one word - IKEA.

IKEA is by far the cheapest place to get storage solutions of any size and shape. Forget container stores, Michaels, Target, or any of those other places, and get thee to IKEA!

How something like this for sorting the papers
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Bank.....61096

Something like this for the craft supplies. If you don't need it right away look around to find it on sale (I got one from Staples on sale for $20 a while ago).

LOL, I linked to that Banker's Box too -- looks so simple for paper organization!

As far as the IRIS stacking drawers, that's the brand I have for my papers. I have 3 individual ones I got at Target on clearance. These ones but for a fraction of the price (like 3 something each instead of 14.75!!) http://amzn.to/1SdVbQr

Is that the one called Organicer? I have seen ads. Looks pricey, I know you said they "work with your budget" but what's the range? Somehow I can't imagine beating $1 bins...

Anyone know if magazine holders like Ikea sells are big enough to hold kids' books? I'm OK if they don't hold the extra large ones, if 90% of our books are in boxes then the others can stand up between them.

And thanks for all the tips, I didn't scroll up enough to see how many people answered!

My biggest issue with storage boxes from IKEA is they don't click shut like the sterilite ones do.
Trofast is $$ and also takes up a lot of space.
What else do you like from Ikea? I'm planning a trip there someday soon (it's been "soon" for months, we bought a closet system in the Spring and I've been meaning to add some parts...) so tell me what to look for!

Organicer in BP is a GREAT store but not cheap. At least not as cheap as you are looking for but you got yourself (and myself!) Some fantastic ideas here!

You can also use napkin holders ($1 lucite from the Dollar Store) to store books.

The 10 drawer rolling cart (multicolor) is now under $30 http://amzn.to/1NleaAP -- lowest I have ever seen!
