No recipe, but I put in an assortment of beans, pearl barley, lentils, potatoes, onion, tofu and/or portobello mushrooms cut in pieces, if I have them, which I usually don't, tomato sauce, tomato paste, mustard, ketchup, honey, black pepper, a teeny bit of cayenne pepper, fresh garlic, bay leaf, and water. and I cook it forever.

My cholent is yummy and veggie:

- 1 onion
- 1 leek (if it's big, use half)
- 1 carrot
- 1 sweet potato
- 3 medium potatoes
- 0.5 lbs dried brown beans
- Chicken flavored soup powder

* Put the beans in your cholent cooking pot, put under water (about 1 inch more than the beans), put on high fire until boiling, then put very low and cover.

* Chop the onions, then fry them until golden brown.
* Add the rest of the ingredients, cut in pieces.
* Add salt, pepper and sweet paprika powder, stir-fry until browned.
* Turn heat to low, cover pan, and let simmer for about 30 minutes.
* Pour the veggies into the pot with the beans. There is no need to add extra water but the water should be about 0.5 inch above the vegetables. Mix everything.
* Add soup powder to taste.
* Cover and simmer on very low fire (should be just boiling) until before shabbes starts, then move everything to the plata.

Just make your regular cholent and skip the meat. You can add some parve frankfurters. SEND ME SOME

mine is similar to momof3's.
I large can of baked beans (it gives the cholent the sweet flavor)
a few handfuls of barley
2 large potatoes peeled and sliced
1 onion diced
1 packed of onion soup mix
garlic powder
salt
cover with water

I brown the onions before I add them and always add paprika. I use equal amounts of mixed beans and lima beans, a little bit of celery and carrot, wheat berries (they are just grains of whole wheat) and a very small amout of barley. Salt, pepper, sugar and a Tbsp or two of molasses.

I get rave reviews. I think browning the onions, wheat berries and paprika are probably the most important.

Which ingredient is it in my cholent (onions, potatoes, barley, cholent mix beans) that makes it smell so good?

My secret ingredient is a can of vegetarian baked beans and steel cut oats.

If I make a parve cholent once on a blue, the secret to pure delicious is caramelizing onions. Smell and tastes yummy!
