I always learned that Emes (truth) does not mean honestly and sheker (lying) does not mean dishonesty. the real definitions are "the will of Hashem" and "against the will of Hashem"
So if something you say is according to the will of Hashem then it is Emes even if it is not honest. and if something is against the will of Hashem then it is sheker even if it is honest
example: crazy gunman asks if his wife was talking to the milkman and you answer no even though they spoke for a half hour. that would be Emes. telling him yes they spoke for a half hour would be sheker even though its true.

I learned that you can lie when it won't negatively impact anybody else. EX: telling someone they are beautiful on their wedding day even if they aren't... nothing "Bad" can come of that! Etc.
