What is the accepted practice with regard to how shadchanim work? Do most state their fee upfront? If not, do they have a right after a shidduch is made to ask for thousands of dollars?

Ask your LOR. I believe if they don't state an amount the going rate would be the norm.....depending on your circles, $1000 per side is not considered high. I think that's what we gave our Shadchan 18+ years ago.

If they don't specify an amount up front, then I would assume you're entitled to pay them the norm in your community, which these days is often around $1000-$1500 per side.
