I was told it's because of a few issues- man is compared to trees and we shouldn't destroy something that feeds us (Hakaras Hatov) are the first I remember.
But I was told if it doesn't produce edible fruit anymore it's less of a problem. I do know someone though who had a tree with zero fruit on it. They were about to uproot it and before they could gorgeous fruits were blossoming for the first time in years!
