What colors are your counters and cabinets?
There are so may different things you can do- I personally doing a lighter backsplash (for light) with box of something that matches the darker color by the oven

The vertical surfaces in the kitchen affect the overall brightness more than the horizontal ones. I'd go light.

Check out houzz.com for ideas. You can also post pictures and get advice from people, including interior decorators, for no charge. They were a huge help to me when we renovated our kitchen.

We have colorful tiles in our kitchen and I love it, makes it such a cheery place. In our current kitchen we have different shades of blue, but in our previous house we had all different colors which I liked much better and I regret not getting the same tiles in our new house.

As I've mentioned elsewhere I'm building a new home (almost finished). I have light cabinets and counters on the perimeter of the kitchen and dark cabinets and darker counter on the island. I knew that I would never be happy with finding a good enough tile to coordinate for the backsplash so I decided to continue the quartzite counters (the lighter ones which have walls behind them) up on to the wall as the backsplash.

I love my kitchen. I have cream cabinets, very dark brown doubters and a unique backsplash.
The cabinets are 50cm above my counter. At the top and bottom of my backsplash I have 10x30cm off white ceramic subway tiles. In the 30cm remaining I put long thin mosaic stone tiles. They range from very dark brown to a light off-white with hi all the shades of brown in between, some solid, some marbled. The grout for the mosaic is dark brown and for the the subway tiles, off-white.
Over the stove is a 70x70cm square of the subway tiles arranged in a herringbone design.
I would have preferred shorter glass subway tiles, but they were about five times the price.
I plan on painting the little remaining wall a beige from the backsplash.
My backsplash is a combination of the following- sort of.

To answer you, I matched both, and the floor!
