What's the minimum comfortable clearance around the sides of the kitchen table so you don't have to squeeze past people or bump into nearby counters?

In a perfect world, 24 inches of clearance around the table and 48 inches around the island. You can go down to 18 and 42, but there will be some squeezing, and people may have to walk sideways.

Try having someone sit in a chair at the table, then see how much room you need to get by comfortably. In terms of the island, a lot depends on the location of pullouts - garbage can, dishwasher, oven, anything that blocks the path of someone walking by.
