My husband makes 42,000 thousand dollars a year as a lawyer...how depressing is that. Granted we are still in our twenties so I hope that increases!! He is getting really good experience though and very motivated to keep going. I make around 60,000 in healthcare.

It is insane that people who make six figures a year are struggling. I always wonder what we could do to make our lifestyles more affordable and manageable.

Depending on the community you live in, six figures (unless that number is in the high six figures) is really not a lot of money but it is enough to not be eligible for any kind of assistance.

ETA: we both work and do well and it's still not enough

It depends where you live. The cost of living varies tremendously from one part of the country to another. In my neck of the woods, low-six-figures will leave you solidly middle class but hardly without worries.

DH around $20,000, mostly freelance so varies
Me: I work 1 full time and one a lot of hours at night and weekend $60,000
Rental income $36,000

We usually have nothing left to buy groceries! It's nuts, my housing is reasonable but tuition is high and we don't qualify for anything, we pay health insurance with deductibles.

I make low to mid six figures and we struggle. We have 8 children. Tuition takes up the bulk of our income. Our housing costs are low because we live in a low cost-of-living area. I commute a long distance to work and while my car is paid off B"H (it's over 10 years old) I still spend a lot each week on gas and tolls. We buy only discount clothing, I wear an old shaitel and I wash and style it myself. We have air conditioning only in the dining room and use it only if we have guests. When we make a simcha it is very small and simple. You get the picture. We live very carefully and frugally despite what would be considered a comfortable middle class income in most demographics.

Dh makes around 65k and I make 100k as an NP. However, because dh works for a frum school, we get a tuition break so the value of his salary is therefore higher.
We have 4 kids, live OOT but the cost of living here is surprisingly high.we don't yet own a home (thinking about moving closer to dh job) and finances are tight. We are not struggling, but we have to be frugal

Dh is a partner in a business and makes usually $300k per year depending on how much profit there is and what the payout is at the end of the year.

It's embarrassing to live comfortably on Imamother. It's an old story. You're only virtuous if you're poor Smile

In US culture in general, income is considered personal, and many imamothers are in the US.

If you work in certain government jobs your salary is public record. If you work for the HHC (NYC public hospital system) salaries are public.
