I'm looking to buy a top load washer and a matching dryer, the sales man was all about thin new steam that cleans better and help to dry, etc. is it realy useful?

I just bought new machines too (haven't even used them yet.) They told me it's a nice feature but totally not necessary so I didn't spend the extra money.

I've used the steam a few times. It helps a lot but is not a major game changer. It is nice to have.
