Many times I will have the student read that paragraph aloud to me and/or I will read it to her. Many girls are able to discern the awkward wording when they themselves try to read it or hear it being read to them.
We then discuss what she would say instead of the awkward sentence. She writes it down and then perfects it.
Of course, this is t always possible to do. But when a student comes over to ask why the phrase was underlined or marked as awkward, we do this.
I also teach my students to read their writings out loud to themselves and listen for awkward phrasing. It seems to help many of them
