I don't have a good voice and am not naturally musical. But I'm also not tone deaf.
I am very, very self conscious about my voice. Even in completely non-pressure environments, and even when a whole group of people are singing, I don't feel comfortable joining in. On my own, at home, I have no problem singing (mostly off-key), but in any other situation it's like my voice just freezes.
I have no interest or delusions of becoming a singer.
But I'm wondering if a few singing lessons might help me understand how to use the voice I do have and just to feel more comfortable with it. Can music lessons help someone not at all musical? Are there teachers who even do that? Any other thoughts or suggestions? I'd love to hear.
Thank you so much!

I'm a voice teacher.
Lessons could definitely help you.
Right now, I have a young student a lot like how you describe yourself. In the course of 6 weeks, she has learned so much! My goal is to send her back to school in the fall, and watch her classmates be amazed. I think it will happen; she is already amazing me.
We are working on:
1. Hearing notes (pitch), and recognizing when a sound is right or wrong;
2. Breathing properly to support the sound, and controlling the breath;
3. Learning the difference between a speaking voice and a singing voice, and building the singing voice.
I hope you pursue this! Music belongs to everyone.

Thank you so much, ImaSinger!
I missed your response earlier, but I'm so glad I've seen it now.
You've really given me hope. I think I'm going to give it a go.
Thank you!
