I did the one that you dont need to move out.

We couldnt walk on the floor until it dried, about 24 hours. It has a strong paint smell. I was told its ok for the baby, but we spent the day outside. They stained in the morning and by the time we went to sleep the smell wasnt as strong.

The other type of staining required you to move out, we couldnt do that for various reasons.

bumping this up .... I am doing my floors soon and I will use the non toxic water base staining (not moisture cure).

Please tell me about the smell.

We are doing one room in our house and do not want to leave.

Can we stay through out the week we were told it would take? Is the smell worse by the last coating?

Did anyone stain their floors and live in the house at the same time?

How bad is the smell? I really don't want to leave...so hard with kids ...

It takes a few days for the smell to go away if you are doing polyurethane, slightly less if you are doing water-based.

I highly recommend doing the poly rather than the water-based. It looks better and lasts longer.

thanks ..it will be a mixture actually and we are doing 5(!) coats.

Did you do poly and stay at home throughout?

We did poly, but it was before we had moved in. I am very sensitive to chemical fumes, so I made sure to stay away totally for a few days. It was an in-neighborhood move and I had been coming over to do things in the house but I found the smell overwhelming so I stayed away until the odor was gone.

I love my wood floors, so despite the hassle, I'm really glad we went with the stain and finish we chose!

You should probably include where you live, otherwise the responses might not be helpful.

I had floors stained and the smell want bad. I had to leave because I couldn't get in the house until it dried. As soon as they could be walked on, I was back in and I didn't notice a terrible odor.

The worst part was the sanding because I found bits of sawdust in strange places for years. I thought you had to sand when you refinished floors.

And for sure Chey the most durable finish. Because s many people have wood in their kitchen, the finishes have become much mor durable.
