I'm so grief-stricken...another expense that's way out of my ability to pay....
The washer broke down...the repair guy says it will cost $375 to repair.
I inherited it from the previous tenant nine years ago.
Where can I get an inexpensive replacement for the washer? The dryer is still working, so I'd keep it, to keep cost down.
Brooklyn, NY

Who gave you this estimate? Do you know which part has to be changed? How about calling somebody else for a second opinion on pricing the job?

A new washing machine will cost more than $375.

The hose and the bearings. The bearings is the expensive part.

I spoke with Maytag, the washer is not replaceable cuz it's one piece.
Yeah, repairing it will be cheaper than replacing it.

Firstly, I'm sorry about your machines. That's a bummer!
I always find town appliance to be very knowledgeable and helpful. They are based in Lakewood but deliver within like 2 days to nyc. I speak to george there.

Yes. I got another estimate, this time from the Herman guy. He said the machine is kaput. He says a new one will cost about $1400 :-(

okay ... what parts did the guy say needed replacement ? there are different types of hoses & bearings. tell me in your best description so I can troubleshoot ... what is wrong with washer - is it not spinning? is it leaking & from where ? or anything else you can think of

sometimes it's knowing where to get the right part at cost & a diagram of how to replace it ... something I've done before for myself as well as others [my mother didn't want to get a new machine & I was able to find the part on-line for $75 and replace it myself instead of the $400 the repairman wanted]

The clothes are dumped into the washer, and that huge tub that usually agitates/turns is no longer turning. This causes a very strong chemical odor.
In addition, there is a leak in the hose when the washer fills up.
Thanks!

If there's any way to get this machine fixed then you should make it happen. None of the newer machines compare to the maytag stackable. Any repairman will tell you this.

chemical or burning rubber smell ... the burning rubber could be the belts which are $24.68 - the bearing $17.05

as far as the leak ... does the washer fill up and leak slowly ? which hose ? is there a hose that you put over a sink to drain ? or are they attached directly to pipes ? or is it leaking inside the machine from hoses you cannot see ?

I wasn't online all day, and I'm checking in now.
Thanks for all of this info, Greenfire. I appreciate it !
So can you come to my home to do the repair? 😂

How many bearings would I need?

The leak is happening as the machine fills up. The point of the leak is difficult to describe, I'll try my best: it's a pipe that brings water into the machine as it's filling up. The leak is at the place where the pipe connects to the basin.

I cannot understand which hose ... it might be worth it to look at the machine with you so we know with certainty which parts to order
